Food, Drinks, Fun, and Fiesta. ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Many people in the United States gather together to celebrate Cinco de Mayo- but are you aware of the real significance behind this fateful day? The most common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is “Mexican Independence Day”, but this is not the case. Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration that commemorates the First Battle of Puebla, which is a battle that occurred in 1862, between Mexican and French forces.

Cinco de Mayo - A little History:

  • On May 5th, 1862, during the U.S. Civil War, the French army invaded Mexico City. French Emperor Napoleon III engaged Mexican troops in a battle near the city of Puebla.

  • Mexican forces emerged victorious, even though they had fewer soldiers and military resources than France. Four days later, Cinco de Mayo was declared a national holiday.

  • Though the victory did not deter France from their invasion, and they ultimately took control over Mexico in 1874, it served as a large morale boost for Mexico and helped them to gain an alliance with the Americans. This ultimately led to Napoleon’s withdrawal from Mexico.

  • Though Cinco de Mayo is not currently an official Mexican holiday, it is actively celebrated in parts of the US as an expression of solidarity with Mexico against the French. We can take this opportunity to celebrate Mexican identity, promote cultural awareness and build community.
